From Middle English, from Old English _god_  ("deity") (akin to Old High German _got_ (a rank of deity)), originally neuter, then changed to masculine to reflect the change in religion to Christianity, both from the Proto-Germanic _\*gudan_ (compare Dutch _god_, German _Gott_, Danish _gud_), from the Proto-Indo-European _\*ǵʰuto-_ ("invoked \[one\]"), from Proto-Indo-European _\*ǵʰewH-_ ("to call, to invoke") or _\*ǵʰew-_ ("to pour").
